The Service Compact Unit (SERVICOM) of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has joined in the celebration of the global Consumer Service Week with discussions amongst the participants that dwelt on ethical reception.

The event, which took place at the headquarters of the university in Abuja on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 saw the SERVICOM Nodal Officer, Mrs. Foluke Adeniran explained that this is the third quarter of the SERVICOM Committee Representatives Executive meeting. I am delighted and humbled to see everyone.

She explained that ethical reception is a professional and moral approach to receiving and interacting with members of the public.

Foluke said ethical practices involve being accountable and professional with a positive attitude in one’s appearance, having respect and empathy.

She expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters, for what she described as his unwavering support.

The Head, NOUN Information and Call Centre, Ms. Wosilatu Ainodion, stated that ethical reception is not only a guiding principle but also a major aspect of credibility, trust and institutional responsibility.

This presentation explores how ethical reception shapes the conduct of NICC, security personnel and staff in general in their engagement with students, the general public and wider stakeholders.

Ethical reception signifies a commitment to fairness, respect and professionalism throughout all engagements.

It is anchored on the principle of integrity, confidentiality, impartiality. Any point of contact, either through NICC digital platforms be it E-ticketing, Email, Call Centre and face-to-face interaction. It is important that whatever opportunity that we have, we are able to demonstrate commitment to serving the needs of our stakeholders,” she said

Ainodion explained that emphasised on how the ethical reception to students should be with respect and fairness safeguarding their confidentiality and providing accurate information and ensuring impartial support.

NOUN, as a leading institution, we must avoid the consequences of poor ethical reception. We need to let students trust us and reduce conflict. Ethical reception assures students that they are supported,” she added.

On her part, the Director of Staff Training and Development, Mrs. Eunice Riki, said that ethics is the  act of doing something in accordance with principles of conduct that are considered correct especially those of a giving profession or group.

We are concerned about work ethics that can be described as a belief in a moral value of work. It is a commitment to performing or doing your duties well,” Riki said.

She added that "we are here because of the students, without the students we have no jobs’’.

As SERVICOM Representatives your role is to calm things down and move things swiftly, bearing in mind the image of the university. NOUN  is a business, we need to take it seriously.
