The Director, Academic Planning, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Greg Okagbare, on Friday, May 22, 2026, led a team of assessors to Benin Study Centre of the university for accreditation assessment of the centre.

The assessment exercise was meant to fine-tune available academic resources at the centre towards an impending accreditation of a proposed programme, Migration Studies, by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The assessment visit formed part of the university’s commitment to ensuring that all academic programmes meet required standards in infrastructure, staffing, learning resources and administrative preparedness before commencement.

During the assessment tour, the delegation, which also included the Director, Centre of Excellence in Migration and Global Studies (CEMGS), Prof. Moses Shaibu and the Deputy Registrar, Exams and Assessment, Dr. Florence Okeke, inspected key facilities within the centre.

Facilities inspected included administrative offices, examination halls, the library and store units.

Special attention was given to the availability and adequacy of academic materials relevant to Migration Studies.

The team carefully reviewed the library holdings to ascertain the availability of current and relevant textbooks, journals and reference materials that would support effective learning and research in the proposed programme.

The Mock Accreditation Team also made cogent recommendations on additional scholarly resources and specialised materials that should be acquired to strengthen the centre’s academic capacity.

In the course of the inspection, the visitors emphasised the urgent need for additional computer systems and improved technological support, especially within the administrative units and examination halls, in order to enhance operational efficiency and support seamless academic activities.

The team also conducted a thorough examination of staff records, facilitators' files and other administrative documents to evaluate compliance with institutional and regulatory standards.

After a facility tour of the centre, there was an interactive session where staff of Benin Study Centre were counseled to embrace professionalism, dedication to duty, teamwork and effective service delivery in order to achieve institutional excellence.

The team further encouraged staff members to develop better understanding of their core responsibilities and to maintain positive and supportive attitude towards students, noting that students remain vital ambassadors and public relations representatives of the university through their experiences and interactions.

The visit ended on a commendatory note, with the assessment team acknowledging the efforts of the management of the centre while also highlighting areas requiring improvement to ensure a successful take-off and sustainability of the proposed Migration Studies programme.
