
A group of 18 students from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Mani Community Study Centre, has organised a one-day free medical outreach for the residents of Taballawa Village in Mani Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The initiative which was part of the requirements for the DES303 ccourse, "Introduction to Community Development," emphasised the importance of community services.
Speaking during the event, the team lead, Malam Auwal Bello, said the outreach targeted three main groups: pregnant women, children under five years of age and the elderly 60 years and above.
He revealed that the medical services offered were rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), sugar level and blood pressure examination.
He further said that pregnant women were administered essential drugs and screened for underlying conditions.

Bello added that for severe cases among the elderly, referrals were made to appropriate medical facilities.
He stated that over 300 people benefited from the medical outreach which provided treatment, drugs, and medical examinations free of charge.
In his remarks, Dr. Shamwil Salisu Bala, the Director of the NOUN Mani Community Study Centre, commended the students for their dedication to community development services and highlighted the significance of the outreach in addressing local healthcare challenges.
He noted that such humanitarian services were crucial for improving public health, especially in rural areas.
Bala also urged the students to adhere to guidelines and safety measures while carrying out their activities so as to ensure the well-being and security of everyone involved.
The director further stated that the students’ effort was the shining example of how education can serve as a foundation for community development.

He expressed the hope that this initiative would be a source of pride for NOUN and inspire other students to continue engaging in similar impactful projects in the future.
The representative of the District Head of Mani also praised the initiative, expressing gratitude to NOUN and its students for their positive impact on the community.
