Seven inmates at the Lafia Medium Security Custodial Centre in Nasarawa State have been matriculated into various degree programmes of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), in a move aimed at promoting rehabilitation and personal transformation through education.
The matriculation ceremony was held on Friday, May 8, 2026, at the custodial centre in Lafia, marking another milestone in the university’s commitment to providing accessible education to all categories of learners, regardless of their status or circumstances.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of NOUN, Prof. Uduma Oji Uduma, urged the inmates to remain focused and determined in their academic pursuits, stressing that their present condition should not define their future.
Represented by the Director of the Lafia Study Centre, Mrs. Rhoda Ezhim, the Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to delivering quality education through its open and distance learning model.
He noted that the university continues to provide opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds to attain their educational aspirations and contribute meaningfully to society.
Administering the oath of matriculation, the Registrar of the university, Mr. Oladipo Ajayi, who was represented by the Assistant Registrar of the Lafia Study Centre, Haruna Abubakar Saeed, charged the inmates to uphold the values of the institution and serve as agents of positive change in society.
Also speaking at the occasion, the Comptroller of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Nasarawa State Command, Mr. Anthony Sanda, reaffirmed the commitment of the correctional service to reforming inmates through education and other empowerment programmes.
According to him, the initiative forms part of broader efforts aimed at preparing inmates for responsible and productive living after regaining their freedom.

They described the initiative as a significant step toward reshaping lives, promoting rehabilitation, and reducing societal stigma through education.
