The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has reaffirmed its commitment to providing quality practical training for its students through effective monitoring of the Students' Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).

The Director of SIWES, Prof. Ganiyat A. Adesina-Uthman, made this known during a monitoring tour of industries across Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where she visited NOUN students undergoing their industrial training.

Addressing students and industry supervisors during the visits, Adesina-Uthman described NOUN as a student-centred university committed to delivering value for money through quality academic instruction and practical learning experiences.

She explained that the monitoring exercise was designed to ensure that students were appropriately placed in relevant organisations and actively engaged in meaningful industrial training.

"NOUN is a student-centred university, and we believe in value for money. That is why we visit industries to ensure that our students are in the right places, acquiring the right skills and doing the right things," she said.

During the exercise, the SIWES Director visited 29 organisations across Port Harcourt, where she interacted with students and their industry supervisors.

She disclosed that feedback from the organisations was overwhelmingly positive, with about 99 per cent of the supervisors commending NOUN students for their innovation, dedication, professionalism, and valuable contributions to their respective workplaces.

According to her, many of the organisations expressed their willingness to accept more NOUN students for future SIWES placements, citing the students' impressive performance and work ethic.

The industry supervisors also praised the university's proactive approach to SIWES administration, describing the monitoring exercise as a clear demonstration of NOUN's commitment to quality assurance and effective supervision of its students.

Adesina-Uthman conveyed the goodwill of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Uduma Oji Uduma, to the management of the various organisations and expressed the university's appreciation for their continued support in mentoring and training NOUN students.

She thanked the industry partners on behalf of the university for providing a conducive learning environment that enables students to acquire practical skills and workplace experience essential for their professional development.

The monitoring exercise, which concluded on July 4, 2026, with a visit to a student undergoing industrial training at the Port Harcourt International Airport, forms part of NOUN's ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration with industry partners and ensure that its students receive quality hands-on training that complements their academic studies.
