The Presbyterian Church of Nigeria (PCN), General Assembly has expressed its desire to delve into partnership with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), in the areas of establishing a special study centre for the physically challenged, sponsoring of competitive prizes for excellence, advocacy programmes, among others.
The Principal Clerk, General Assembly, Most Rev. Dr. Miracle Ajah, disclosed this when he led a 9-man delegation on a courtesy visit to the NOUN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters in his office, at the university headquarters in Abuja.
“We appeal to the management of NOUN to consider hosting a special study centre for persons with disability, to be sited in Aba, Abia state, to alleviate the misfortunes, adverse socio-economic outcomes, which this class of people are more likely to experience.
“We are here primarily to share with you the vision and mission of PCN for a better society where harmony and progress co-exist,” the Most Reverend added.
He said PCN desires to interface with relevant agencies, institutions and persons in the country and beyond for collaborative welfare of the church and the society.
“Having witnessed some of the giant strides of NOUN in ensuring greater access to education through open and distance learning, which are both flexible and cost effective, our church would like to collaborate with the university in their advocacy programmes, by spreading the good news among our members through all the available channels of the church.
“We humbly request for an opportunity to sponsor two competitive prizes for excellence to motivate hard work and stronger scholarship among persons with disability, and students of Christian Religious Studies, with effect from the next Convocation Ceremony, tagged: The PCN Prize for Best Graduating Student for ‘Differently –Abled’ Persons, and PCN Prize for the Best Graduating Student in Christian Religious Studies,” he said.
Berthed in the year 1846, the PCN has existed for 175 years, and will be officially celebrating the milestone of fruitful witness in Abuja, Nigeria soon, he explained.
A life application Bible termed “Life Wire” was later presented to the Vice-Chancellor as he was urged by the clergy to always believe in it.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Femi Peters, in his response, welcomed the delegation for the courtesy visit and assured them that the university will look into their request.
On the issue of special study centre, the Vice-Chancellor stated that the university will refer back to the criteria and see how it can accommodate establishing a special study centre for the physically challenged.
He further commended the PCN for its generosity by giving competitive prices and scholarship to students, adding that the act will bring about motivation and hard work.
The high point of the visit was a special prayer for the VC, which was led by the Most Rev Dr. Miracle Ajah.
