The Director, Enugu Study Centre, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Prof. Loveth O. Ekwueme, has commended newly admitted students for choosing the university as their preferred institution for academic pursuits.

Prof. Ekwueme gave the commendation during the 2026_2 orientation exercise held on Monday, October 5, 2026, at the centre in Enugu.

She said the orientation was organised to acquaint students with the structure of their programmes, the technology driving Open and Distance Learning, ODL, and the values that define the university.

According to her, choosing NOUN means embracing flexibility, independence and the courage to learn at one’s own pace and in one’s own way.

Describing the orientation as the beginning of a new chapter in their lives, she noted that in NOUN, knowledge meets learners wherever they are — at home, at work or on the move.

“Success in your academic journey will not come by chance, but through discipline, determination and the ability to rise each time you stumble,” she told the students.

The Director said education is the key that unlocks opportunities, assuring the students that they are not alone as facilitators, administrative and ICT staff are available to guide them.

She stressed that education goes beyond acquiring certificates, but involves becoming critical thinkers, problem-solvers and leaders capable of contributing to societal development.

“We believe that each of you has the potential to excel, and the university management is committed to nurturing that potential,” Ekwueme said.

She urged the students to dream big, stay focused, push beyond their limits and familiarise themselves with their desk officers for reliable academic guidance.

On examinations, Ekwueme reaffirmed the university’s zero tolerance for malpractice, warning that both staff and students found culpable would be decisively sanctioned.

She urged strict adherence to the rules and regulations governing examinations.

Also speaking, Head of Library Unit, Dr. Grace Elem, described the library as the lifeline of any institution, noting that NOUN operates a hybrid library system, combining physical and e-library resources to enhance learning.

Elem decried low patronage of the library by some students and urged freshers not to rely solely on course materials, but to explore other resources that could broaden their academic horizon.

She emphasised the need for adherence to library rules and regulations.

Other resource persons at the orientation included the Assistant Registrar, Mr. Michael Okpara; Administrative Officer II, Mrs. Adaobi S. Ogbeide; Chief Confidential Secretary, Mrs. Faustina Chikeleze; Student Counsellors, Mrs. Ladi Ojonugwa and Mrs. Njideka Nwajagu; Systems Analysts, Mr. Ogheneovovwero Owins and Mrs. Jenifer Nwonyi; Higher Executive Officer, Mrs. Ngozi Mba; Laboratory Technologist II, Mrs. Blessing Celestine; Accountant I, Mrs. Oluyemisi Yetunde Kareem; Store Officer, Mr. Morah Ikechukwu; and Centre Security Officer, Mrs. Lucy Akpu.

The event featured an interactive session where students asked questions and received clarifications from the centre management.
