It was a celebration galore on Monday, December 9, 2024 as the Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS), National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) observed a novel end-of-the year get-together at the headquarters of the university in Abuja.
The event saw a plethora of commendations and encomiums on the management.
Speaking while declaring the get-together open, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters, represented by the Director, Directorate of Research Administration (DRA), Prof. Sammy Ayodele, said the faculty's welfare get-together was not only a novel idea but also a welcome development in the annals of the faculty as well as the university.
While sympathising with the faculty over the demise of one their colleagues, Abel Obama, the VC commended them for being a pace-setter in organising the first welfare get-together in the university.

He added that "it is a good thing after you have laboured academically from the beginning of the year to the end of the year, you have a relaxation period."
While congratulating the faculty, Peters said relaxation period happens in other civilised countries of the world.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Dean of the faculty, Prof. Kamal Bello, appreciated members of staff of the faculty for their unwavering commitment towards the growth of the faculty.
"As a Social Sciences Faculty, I believed that at the end of the year like this, we bring ourselves together to merry, wine together, drink together and jaw-jaw together instead of the usual confrontations, arguments, discussions; we now come to relax," the dean said.
While thanking the VC for his prompt and effective staff's welfare package, Bello said the faculty has been up and doing in the area of research with a view to finding solutions to numerous challenges facing the country.
The dean also thanked Dr. Jacob Orimaye-led FSS Welfare Committee for organising the event, he also assured the members of the faculty’s preparedness and determination to carry members along.
He said the faculty will continue to observe the event every year and not just "work, work and work."
The event featured reflections and testimonies on the impacts of the Welfare Committee, presentation of gifts and suggestions on how to move the faculty Welfare Committee forward.
